AI Race Faces a Reality Check as Industry Leaders Warn of Catastrophic Risks

Growing concerns over the potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence are prompting some of the industry's most prominent leaders to call for a more cautious approach to development
The race to build increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems is facing a new reality check, with leading figures in the industry warning that the technology's potential risks can no longer be treated as science fiction. Concerns over the possibility of rogue or misaligned AI systems causing catastrophic harm have increasingly moved into discussions among the companies developing the technology.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said over the weekend that the company would not pursue its much-anticipated public listing this year, arguing that the current environment around AI safety made such a move inappropriate. Speaking to Fortune, Altman said he believed going public at this point would be an “ill-advised” decision given everything happening around AI safety. The comments underline how concerns about the development and control of advanced AI are becoming increasingly important even for the companies at the centre of the technology boom.
AI leaders call for a slower approach to development
Altman's comments came alongside similar warnings from other prominent technology leaders. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei called for the industry to slow the pace of AI development so that safety measures can catch up with increasingly capable systems. He warned that a misaligned swarm of AI agents could potentially take control of parts of the internet within six to 12 months.
The warning was notable because it came from a company actively involved in developing advanced AI systems, highlighting the tension between the rapid commercial race and the need to ensure that increasingly autonomous systems remain under human control. Elon Musk also expressed agreement with Amodei's concerns, adding further weight to the growing discussion around the risks associated with advanced AI.
Altman has acknowledged that the possibility of AI-driven extinction is difficult to quantify, questioning how anyone could confidently assign a specific probability to such an outcome. However, he argued that uncertainty should not be interpreted as a reason for inaction. Instead, AI companies and governments should behave as though even relatively low estimates of catastrophic risk are unacceptable.
Profit and competition cannot come before AI safety
Altman also agreed with Amodei that AI companies need to “pace the frontier”, saying the issue had become a major topic of discussion within OpenAI in recent weeks. His comments suggest that the industry's leading companies are increasingly confronting the challenge of balancing rapid technological progress with safeguards designed to prevent harmful outcomes.
The debate comes as AI systems become more capable and increasingly able to perform tasks with limited human intervention. While the technology offers significant potential benefits, the warnings from its own leading developers show that questions around control, alignment and safety are becoming harder to ignore.
For the AI industry, the challenge now is finding a balance between maintaining technological progress and ensuring that commercial incentives, competition and development speed do not move faster than the safeguards needed to manage the risks.
