AI Boom Raises Questions Over OpenAI’s Australian Revenue and Tax Contributions

AI Boom Raises Questions Over OpenAI’s Australian Revenue and Tax Contributions

OpenAI’s Australian financial disclosures have raised questions about how much revenue the artificial intelligence (AI) company generates locally and how much tax it contributes. Figures published by parliament show that the company’s Australian subsidiary recorded $3.87 million in revenue between May 14 and December 31, 2025, with a reported tax bill of $88,000.
The tax payment represented slightly more than 2% of the subsidiary’s reported revenue during the period. However, the figures do not provide a complete picture of OpenAI’s Australian business, particularly as the company continues to expand its AI products and services globally.

Australian Revenue Figures Offer an Incomplete Picture

The reported figures cover less than a full year of operations, making direct comparisons with a complete financial year difficult. More importantly, it remains unclear how much revenue from Australian customers is recorded by OpenAI’s local subsidiary and how much flows through other related entities.
OpenAI’s public terms and conditions indicate that Australian ChatGPT users contract with its US-based entity. As a result, some revenue generated through Australian consumer subscriptions may not appear in the Australian subsidiary’s reported figures.
This makes it difficult to determine how much Australians spend on ChatGPT and other OpenAI services overall. The company declined to comment when asked to provide further context for the disclosed numbers.

Tax Contribution Cannot Be Assessed From Revenue Alone

Although OpenAI’s Australian subsidiary reported paying $88,000 in tax, the available figures do not disclose how much profit the entity generated during the period.
Revenue and profit are different measures, and a company’s tax position cannot be reliably assessed using revenue alone. Without details of taxable profit and the relevant financial arrangements, the reported figures are insufficient to establish the subsidiary’s effective tax rate.
The disclosure therefore provides only a limited view of OpenAI’s Australian tax contribution. It also leaves unanswered broader questions about how revenue and profits are allocated across the company’s international business structure.

AI Investment Boom Adds to Scrutiny

The figures come as technology companies and investors commit hundreds of billions of dollars to infrastructure intended to support AI development and adoption. Large projections of future revenue have helped underpin this spending, making the actual financial performance of AI businesses an important point of interest.
However, OpenAI’s Australian subsidiary figures alone cannot establish the company’s overall commercial performance or the total amount Australians spend on AI services. A clearer assessment would require more comprehensive information about customer revenue, related entities and profitability.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Further financial disclosures on OpenAI’s revenue allocation, profitability and tax contributions could provide a clearer picture of its Australian business.
