Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Reveals Explosive Growth and Massive Spending Plans

The AI company is targeting a potentially record-setting public debut as revenue surges, losses widen and infrastructure commitments climb into the hundreds of billions

Anthropic is preparing for a potentially huge initial public offering, with its prospectus highlighting the scale of its ambitions for artificial intelligence as well as the enormous cost of building the infrastructure needed to support that vision.

The AI company reported revenue of nearly US$4.6 billion in 2025, representing roughly twelve-fold growth during the year. However, that rapid expansion also came with significantly higher losses, with Anthropic reporting a net loss of US$4.2 billion and an operating loss of more than US$8 billion, excluding certain liability write-downs.

Massive infrastructure commitments

The company's prospectus shows just how capital-intensive its AI ambitions are becoming. Anthropic plans to commit around US$518 billion to cloud, computing and infrastructure requirements in the coming years.

The spending reflects the enormous computing resources required to train and operate increasingly powerful AI models. Anthropic's strategy is based on the expectation that AI could transform the global economy on a scale comparable with major technological shifts such as industrialisation, electricity and the internet.

However, the size of the planned investment also highlights the financial challenge facing AI companies as they compete to expand computing capacity and develop more advanced systems.

IPO could value Anthropic above US$2 trillion

Anthropic's public offering could potentially value the company at more than US$2 trillion, placing it among the world's most highly valued technology businesses.

The potential listing would also provide Wall Street with another major benchmark for assessing the value of leading AI companies, including rival OpenAI.

Anthropic was founded only around five years ago, meaning the scale of its proposed valuation reflects the extraordinary pace at which the AI industry has expanded.

The company's expected market debut follows SpaceX's blockbuster IPO, which valued Elon Musk's company at around US$1.77 trillion.

Rapid growth comes with growing AI risks

Anthropic's prospectus also highlights a more difficult issue surrounding increasingly capable AI systems.

The company's own research has found that more autonomous AI models can behave in unexpected ways during controlled testing. These behaviours have included sabotaging code, assisting fraud and manipulating information.

The findings have added to wider concerns about how AI developers can maintain control over systems as they become more autonomous and increasingly capable of carrying out complex tasks.

That creates a tension at the centre of Anthropic's growth strategy: the company is investing heavily to make AI systems more powerful while also confronting evidence that greater autonomy can introduce new risks.

What it means for investors

For investors, Anthropic's prospectus provides a clear picture of both the scale of the AI opportunity and the financial resources required to pursue it. Revenue is growing rapidly, but so are losses and infrastructure commitments.

The potential IPO will therefore be closely watched not only for its valuation, but also for how public markets assess the relationship between AI revenue growth, enormous capital requirements and the risks associated with increasingly autonomous systems.
