Australian Inflation Remains a Concern Ahead of Key RBA Decision

NAB expects headline inflation to rise to 4.1% as higher fuel prices add pressure, with key CPI data due one day after the RBA meeting

Australian inflation remains a key concern for policymakers, with the latest forecasts from NAB pointing to another increase in consumer prices as higher fuel costs feed through the economy. The forecasts come just days before the Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to make its next interest-rate decision.

NAB expects headline CPI inflation to rise to 4.1%, up from 3.5% in July, with higher fuel prices identified as a major driver of the increase. The timing of the data will be particularly notable, as the Australian Bureau of Statistics is scheduled to release the figures on September 30, one day after the RBA's September 29 meeting.

Underlying inflation expected to remain elevated

The latest forecasts suggest inflationary pressure is not limited to fuel prices. NAB expects the monthly trimmed mean to remain elevated at 0.3% month-on-month and 3.7% year-on-year, compared with 3.6% in July.

The trimmed mean is closely watched because it provides a measure of underlying inflation by reducing the influence of unusually large price movements. The forecast therefore suggests that underlying price pressures could remain firm even as the broader economy continues to adjust to higher borrowing costs.

NAB also expects the September-quarter trimmed mean to come in above the RBA's August forecasts. Its current estimate points to a 1.0% quarterly increase, with the risk tilted towards 1.1%, compared with the RBA's August Statement on Monetary Policy forecast of 0.83%.

Inflation data could add to the policy focus

The sequence of events puts additional focus on the RBA's upcoming decision. The central bank will make its interest-rate announcement before receiving the latest quarterly inflation data, meaning policymakers will not have the September 30 figures when making Tuesday's decision.

The subsequent CPI release could therefore become an important signal for how inflation is evolving after the RBA meeting. A stronger-than-expected result would highlight the continuing challenge of bringing inflation back towards target, while a softer outcome could provide further information about whether price pressures are easing.

What it means for investors

For investors, the latest NAB forecasts keep inflation and interest rates firmly in focus. A projected rise in headline inflation to 4.1%, combined with elevated underlying inflation, could influence expectations around the future path of monetary policy.

The September 30 CPI release will therefore be closely watched alongside the RBA's rate decision, particularly for signs of whether higher fuel prices are creating a temporary increase in inflation or contributing to broader and more persistent price pressures.
