What the Latest RBA Survey Reveals About Public Awareness

What the Latest RBA Survey Reveals About Public Awareness

Australians understand inflation—but not the RBA's full role

A new Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) survey suggests Australians have a strong understanding of the central bank's role in managing inflation and setting interest rates. However, awareness of the RBA's broader responsibilities, particularly its objective of supporting full employment, remains significantly lower.

The findings highlight that while monetary policy receives widespread public attention, many Australians are less familiar with the wider responsibilities that guide the RBA's decision-making.

Interest rates remain the RBA's most recognised responsibility

According to the survey, most respondents correctly identified the RBA's role in setting the cash rate and maintaining price stability. More than half were also aware that the RBA aims to keep inflation within its target range, reflecting the strong public focus on inflation following recent interest rate increases.

Years of rising borrowing costs and cost-of-living pressures have made the RBA's inflation target one of the most closely followed aspects of Australia's economic policy.

Full employment receives far less attention

In contrast, awareness of the RBA's responsibility to support full employment was considerably lower, with only a small proportion of respondents recognising it as one of the Bank's key objectives.

Unlike inflation, which is measured against a clearly defined target range, full employment is a broader economic objective without a fixed numerical benchmark. As a result, it often receives less public attention despite being one of the RBA's core policy goals.

Why public understanding matters

The survey highlights how public perception of the RBA is largely shaped by interest rate decisions and inflation outcomes. While these remain central to the Bank's work, the RBA also considers employment, financial system stability, and broader economic conditions when making monetary policy decisions.

A better understanding of these responsibilities may help Australians place future interest rate decisions into a broader economic context rather than viewing them solely through the lens of inflation.

What Australians should watch next

As the RBA continues balancing inflation, employment, and economic growth, future policy decisions will remain closely linked to incoming economic data, including inflation, labour market conditions, and consumer spending. Investors and households alike will continue monitoring these indicators for clues about the direction of interest rates.

For now, the latest survey suggests Australians have a solid understanding of the RBA's role in controlling inflation, but there is still room to improve public awareness of the Bank's broader responsibilities. Understanding these objectives provides a clearer picture of how monetary policy decisions are made and why the RBA's role extends well beyond setting interest rates.
