Treasurer Says Australian Economy Remains Strong Despite Global Uncertainty

Australia records 2.1% annual GDP growth as the Treasurer highlights resilient economic activity, stronger incomes and business investment

Australia’s economy continued to show resilience through the June quarter, with annual GDP growth reaching 2.1% and the economy expanding 0.4% over the quarter. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the figures demonstrated the strength of Australian economic activity despite ongoing global uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.

Chalmers pointed to Australia’s position compared with other major advanced economies, saying annual growth was as strong or stronger than every major advanced economy, matching the United States and exceeding growth across several other comparable economies.

Private economy continues to support growth

The Treasurer highlighted several areas supporting the economy, including dwelling investment, rising incomes and business investment. He said the private economy was increasingly driving growth, supported by a solid pipeline of investment from Australian businesses.

The June quarter figures suggest economic activity has remained relatively resilient despite challenging global conditions. Stronger household incomes and renewed dwelling investment are also providing support as businesses continue to plan and invest.

Australia maintains strong employment performance

Chalmers also pointed to Australia's labour market performance, saying the country has recorded stronger employment growth than almost every major advanced economy.

He argued that the combination of economic growth, employment gains and investment demonstrates the resilience of the Australian economy despite uncertainty affecting global markets.

Australia also continues to compare favourably on government debt. According to the Treasurer, Australia has lower gross debt-to-GDP than every major advanced economy, providing a relatively stronger fiscal position compared with many international peers.

What it means for investors

For investors, the latest GDP figures highlight an Australian economy that continues to expand despite global uncertainty. 2.1% annual growth and 0.4% quarterly growth point to continued economic activity, while dwelling investment, employment and business investment remain important areas to watch.

The outlook will depend on whether this resilience can continue alongside inflation pressures, interest-rate settings and changing global conditions. For markets, sustained private-sector investment and stronger economic growth could provide support, while any renewed weakness in activity could influence expectations around monetary policy.
