Millennials Dominate Investment Markets as Australia’s Investor Base Gets Younger

CommSec says younger Australians are reshaping the investment market, with more brokerage accounts, higher trading activity and growing interest in international opportunities
Australia’s investor base is becoming younger and more active, according to new analysis from online brokerage firm CommSec.
The analysis, covering more than two million customers, found that Australians are opening more brokerage accounts, trading more frequently and increasingly looking beyond domestic stocks for investment opportunities.
Younger investors lead the shift
The biggest changes are being seen among younger investors, with millennials emerging as a major force in Australia’s investment market.
CommSec recorded 11.5% growth in active customers over the past financial year, while trading volumes increased 27% and traded value rose 33%.
The figures suggest investing is becoming more mainstream, with younger Australians showing greater willingness to participate in financial markets and explore different investment opportunities.
International markets gain attention
The shift is not only about the number of people investing. Younger investors are also becoming more willing to look beyond Australian stocks, increasing their exposure to international markets.
CommSec said how Australians approach investing can vary significantly depending on their age, with the most significant changes occurring among younger investors.
What it means for investors
The growing participation of younger Australians could continue to reshape the investment landscape, particularly as international markets become easier to access. Higher trading activity and greater interest in overseas opportunities could broaden investor portfolios, while the increasing participation of millennials highlights a long-term shift in how Australians engage with financial markets.
