Iron Ore Prices Rise on Renewed Chinese Demand, Lifting Australia’s Big Miners

Expectations of increased restocking by Chinese steel mills have supported iron ore prices and lifted major Australian mining stocks, although rising supply could limit further gains.

Iron ore prices rose slightly on Monday, helped by hopes that Chinese steelmakers will start buying again. This positive mood also lifted shares of Australia’s top mining companies. Rio Tinto increased 1.3% to $164.46, Fortescue increased 1.8% to $15.61, and BHP increased 2.5% to $62.44 by 2:00 pm AEDT.

This increase follows a poorer week for iron ore, when low demand and rumors of increased supply drove down prices. . The recovery now depends on whether Chinese steel mills actually buy more in the next few days, since some producers are still hesitant to restock.

Iron Ore Prices Recover as Chinese Mills Prepare to Restock

On China's Dalian Commodity Exchange increased by 0.12% to 684.5 yuan, equivalent to USD.tonne.

The price movements reflect expectations that more Chinese steel mills will return to the spot market this week to rebuild feedstock inventories and maintain production.

The week-long National Day holiday in China momentarily disrupted regular business operations. However, because several mills were hesitant to replenish supplies due to narrow profit margins, restocking during the three working days after the holiday fell short of expectations.

A stronger return to the market could provide near-term support for iron ore demand. However, the extent of any recovery will depend on whether steelmakers increase purchases beyond the initial post-holiday period.

Lower Coke Prices Offer Some Relief to Steelmakers

Conditions in the broader steelmaking sector have also provided some support to raw material prices. A decline in spot coke prices has helped narrow losses for steel producers, potentially reducing pressure to cut production.

The demand for iron ore and other production inputs may be supported by improved steelmaking economics, according to analysts at broker First Futures. Mills may be less motivated to cut output when losses decrease, which could encourage the use of necessary raw materials.

Other steelmaking ingredients also recorded gains. Futures prices for coking coal and coke rose 2.2% and 1.8%, respectively, amid continuing concerns about a slow recovery in supply.

These movements suggest that market sentiment is being influenced by both expectations of improved purchasing activity and conditions affecting the cost of steel production.

Rising Supply Could Limit Further Price Gains

Iron ore's future is still uncertain despite the recent rebound. As miners increase shipments to achieve quarterly and annual targets, expectations of increased supply in the fourth quarter may limit future price increases.

This potential rise in availability presents a counterweight to stronger Chinese restocking demand. Even if steel mills return to the spot market in greater numbers, additional shipments could limit the extent to which prices strengthen.

The market also remains sensitive to the profitability of steel production. The recent caution among Chinese mills suggests that purchasing decisions are still affected by their margins, even though lower coke prices have provided some respite.

Therefore, rather than being proof of a long-term revival in demand, the most recent price increases can be an indication of better short-term expectations. .

What Investors Should Watch Next

Whether Chinese steel mills boost spot purchases during the week and whether the ensuing demand is adequate to handle increased shipments of iron ore will be the immediate focus.

Investors who track BHP, Rio Tinto, and Fortescue may also keep an eye on how iron ore prices react to shifts in Chinese purchasing patterns and supply projections for the fourth quarter.  The three companies recorded gains on Monday, but their share-price movements do not establish whether the improvement in commodity prices will persist.

For now, renewed restocking expectations and lower coke prices are providing support to the iron ore market. The balance between Chinese demand and inbound supplies will determine how long the recovery lasts, since the possibility of increasing supply continues to be a major obstacle.
