IMF lifts 2026 global growth forecast on AI investment boost

IMF raises its 2026 global growth forecast on the back of strong AI investment, but warns of growing debt and geopolitical risks
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised its global growth forecast for 2026 to 3.1% from 3% in July. The strong outlook has been supported by solid investment in artificial intelligence (AI), but higher debt levels and the conflict in the Middle East threaten the stability of the global economy.
The new forecast comes as growth is increasingly concentrated in a smaller set of nations. In a meeting in Bangkok, the IMF noted the growing gap between countries that have benefited from AI investment and those with limited exposure to the tech sector.

Global Growth Fueled by AI Investment
Strong investment in AI has been a significant driver behind the IMF’s upward revision. But the benefits are still not evenly distributed across the economies.
The IMF says just 32 countries now account for 95% of global growth, down from 54 countries in April. It’s a reflection of that as economic activity becomes more and more concentrated in fewer countries.
Some markets are growing due to investment in technology, but other economies are struggling to access the growing AI industry. That divergence raises questions about the extent of the global expansion.
Economic Growth Downgrades Are Spreading
The IMF has cut its growth forecast for 47% of economies since its April forecasts, even with the improved global outlook.
Some of the affected countries are energy importers outside AI value chains, and thus are less exposed to the investment which supports growth elsewhere. The broad revisions indicate that a brighter global outlook does not necessarily translate to better individual economies.
The gap between the aggregate forecast and the country-level projections highlights a growing divergence in the world economy.

Middle East Conflict Hits Gulf Outlook
The most downward revisions have come in the Gulf countries directly affected by the US-Israeli war against Iran.
Saudi Arabia’s economy is now forecast to shrink 3.3% in 2026, versus the 1.7% growth it predicted in July. The revision reflects a sharp deterioration in the outlook for a country directly affected by the conflict.
The IMF has also highlighted rising debt burdens and geopolitical tensions as major downside risks that could weigh on the performance of the global economy.
What investors should watch for next
Investors will be looking for whether AI investment will continue to fuel global growth, if economic gains are distributed to more countries, and how geopolitical tensions and increasing debt will impact future forecasts.
For now, the IMF's upgrade to 3.1% growth in 2026 signals a modestly improved global outlook. However, broad-based downgrades of the economic outlook and the concentration of growth in a smaller number of countries suggest that the recovery is still uneven and faces additional risks.
