Household Spending Rises for Third Month as Consumer Activity Strengthens

Australian households continue to increase spending as recreation, hospitality and healthcare drive July growth

Australian household spending rose 1.1% in July 2026, marking the third consecutive monthly increase, according to seasonally adjusted figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The latest rise follows a 1% increase in June and a 1.2% increase in May, pointing to continued resilience in consumer activity despite changing household costs.

In nominal terms, household spending was 7% higher than the same month a year earlier, recording its strongest annual growth since June 2023. ABS head of business statistics Tom Lay said the July increase was led by spending on recreation and culture, food, hotels, cafes and restaurants, and health.

Recreation and hospitality spending remain strong

Recreation and culture spending increased 1.5% in July, supported by higher spending on gambling activities, major sporting events and cinema attendance. The result suggests Australians continued to allocate money towards entertainment and leisure activities during the month, helping support overall household expenditure.

Spending across hospitality-related categories also increased. Food spending rose 1%, while spending on hotels, cafes and restaurants climbed 1.1%. The ABS said price rises were a notable factor behind these increases, with catering services, including restaurants, cafes and takeaway businesses, leading the growth within hotels, cafes and restaurants.

Healthcare and fuel also contribute to the increase

Healthcare spending increased 1.2% in July, with households spending more on pharmaceuticals, general healthcare services, eye care and dental treatment. The increase added to the broader rise in household expenditure and demonstrates that spending growth during the month was not limited to discretionary categories.

Nominal fuel spending rose 2.2%, although the ABS noted that the increase was partly influenced by higher fuel prices. Fuel excise duty increased by 16 cents per litre from July 1, following the partial removal of cuts introduced through the federal government's Fuel Tax Relief measures in April. As a result, the increase in fuel spending does not necessarily represent an equivalent rise in the amount of fuel purchased.

What it means for investors

For investors, the continued increase in household spending provides a supportive signal for consumer-facing businesses, particularly companies exposed to retail, hospitality, entertainment and other areas where household expenditure can influence revenue. The 7% annual increase in nominal spending also highlights the ongoing strength of consumer activity compared with a year earlier.

However, investors should consider the role of higher prices in the latest figures, particularly across food, hospitality and fuel. The key question will be whether household spending continues to grow as strongly in the coming months and whether rising expenditure reflects stronger underlying consumer demand or increasing costs.
