Future Fund Delivers 14.8% Return, Exceeding Long-Term Target

Australia’s sovereign wealth fund strengthens its performance as annual returns improve and its long-term result remains above the mandated target

Australia’s Future Fund has delivered a strong investment performance for the financial year ended June 30, 2026, recording an annual return of 14.8%.

The result marks a significant improvement from the 12.2% return achieved in the equivalent period in 2025, highlighting stronger investment performance despite continued uncertainty across global markets.

The Future Fund is Australia’s key sovereign wealth fund and plays an important role in managing capital for the country over the long term. The latest government update described the result as evidence that the fund’s performance is continuing to strengthen while supporting Australia’s national priorities.

Future Fund adds $37.4 billion in value

The stronger annual return helped the Future Fund grow by $37.4 billion over the past year, according to the Albanese government.

The increase represents a substantial addition to the fund following a year in which investors continued to face an uncertain global environment. Despite those conditions, the fund was able to generate a return well above the previous year's result.

The latest performance also provides a broader indication of the fund’s ability to manage investments with a long-term focus rather than being driven solely by short-term market movements.

Long-term return remains above mandate

The Future Fund’s longer-term performance also remains ahead of its investment objective.

The fund recorded a 10-year return of 9.0%, compared with its mandated target return of 7.1%. This places the fund 1.9 percentage points above its long-term target, demonstrating that its performance has remained ahead of the required benchmark over the decade.

The improvement in the latest annual result, combined with the stronger long-term performance, comes as global markets continue to operate against a backdrop of economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

What it means for investors

For investors, the Future Fund’s performance highlights the importance of maintaining a long-term investment approach through changing market conditions. The rise in annual returns and the fund’s performance above its 10-year mandate indicate that the sovereign wealth fund continues to build value while focusing on its longer-term objectives.

The latest result also shows that strong annual performance can make a meaningful difference to the size of a large investment pool, with the Future Fund adding $37.4 billion in value over the year.
