China’s new energy vehicle exports surged 157% year-on-year to 600,000 vehicles in September, accounting for a record 54% of the country’s total vehicle exports, according to Commonwealth Bank economist John Oh. However, planned European restrictions on Chinese hybrid imports could reshape export patterns, while Australia is becoming an increasingly important destination for Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.

Chinese EV Exports Reach New Highs

The September figures highlight the growing role of new energy vehicles in China’s automotive export market. Chinese hybrid exports to the European Union also increased 172% during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.

The expansion reflects strong export activity, although the outlook for individual markets may change as trade restrictions evolve.

EU Plans Restrictions on Chinese Hybrid Imports

The European Union plans to cap imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles at 350,000 annually from 2027, adding to existing tariffs on Chinese battery electric vehicles.

Mr. Oh warned that the proposed restrictions could reduce Europe’s importance as an export destination for Chinese hybrids. He estimated that the curbs could reduce exports to the EU by around 50–55%, potentially encouraging manufacturers to reassess their market strategies.

Australia Gains Importance for Chinese EV Makers

Australia is also emerging as a significant destination for Chinese electric vehicles, ranking eighth among export markets for Chinese EVs.

According to Oh, Chinese battery electric vehicle sales in Australia surged 257% year-on-year to 16,602 vehicles, accounting for 66% of Australian BEV sales. This growth highlights Australia’s increasing importance as Chinese manufacturers navigate changing conditions in Europe.

What Investors Should Watch Next
Investors may monitor how Chinese automakers respond to the EU’s 2027 import cap and whether Australia continues to gain importance as an export market.
