Aussie dollar strengthens while ASX trading activity remains resilient

Aussie dollar strengthens while ASX trading activity remains resilient

Australian dollar moves above US72 cents as changing rate expectations support the currency, while ASX trading remains active despite calmer volatility

The Australian dollar has strengthened to its highest level since May, moving above US72 cents as shifting expectations around interest rates support demand for the local currency. At 1pm AEST, the Australian dollar was trading at 72.03 US cents, up 0.14%, marking its strongest level since May 15.

Several factors influence demand for the Australian dollar, including economic sentiment, commodity prices and differences in interest rates between Australia and other major economies. The latest rally gained momentum after hotter-than-expected inflation data on Wednesday, prompting several local and international banks to reassess their expectations for Reserve Bank of Australia interest rates. Some institutions are now forecasting one more RBA rate increase, which has increased the relative value of the Australian currency.

ASX trading remains active as volatility settles

While the Australian dollar has strengthened, trading conditions on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) have become less volatile compared with earlier in the year. The ASX said volatility during August had not been as extreme as in February 2026, when average daily trades reached 3.07 million.

In August, average daily trading activity has been around 3.14 million trades, with the average daily value of trades reaching $8.47 billion. The figures indicate that investor activity has remained strong even as market volatility has moderated.

The exchange also highlighted Super Thursday on August 20, when approximately 25 major companies reported their results. It was the biggest trading day of August, with around 3.85 million trades worth approximately $11.3 billion. The session included results from 17 companies among the top 200 listed stocks.

What it means for investors

For investors, the stronger Australian dollar and resilient ASX trading activity point to a market that remains active despite a calmer volatility environment. A stronger currency can influence companies with significant overseas exposure, while changes in RBA rate expectations could continue to affect investor positioning across banks, property, consumer stocks and other interest-rate-sensitive sectors.

At the same time, August's 3.14 million average daily trades and $8.47 billion average daily trading value show that investors have continued to participate actively even without the sharper swings seen earlier in the year. The combination of currency strength, evolving rate expectations and sustained market participation will remain important factors for Australian investors as conditions develop.
